The Postal Service has announced that more stamps to be issued in 2017, and famed fashion designer Oscar de la Renta will be honored. “The new year is shaping up to be exceptional as the Postal Service continues to produce stamps that celebrate the people, events and cultural milestones that are unique to the history of our great nation,” said Mary-Anne Penner, U.S. Postal Service Director, Stamp Services. “We are very excited to showcase these miniature works of art to help continue telling America’s story as we add to the lineup of 2017 stamps announced earlier.”

Among the newest additions: An array of stamps dedicated to the late Oscar de la Renta. Most widely known for dressing the nation’s first ladies and celebrities, Oscar de la Renta, who passed away at age 82 in October 2014, was one of the world’s leading fashion designers for more than 50 years.

Born in the Dominican Republic in 1932, de la Renta apprenticed with Spanish master, Cristobal Balenciaga before moving to Paris to work at Lanvin, where he joined Antonio del Castillo as a couture assistant. In 1963, he moved to New York to design the couture collection for Elizabeth Arden, and two years later, launched his eponymous label, which has since evolved into a $600 million-a-year business, known for its ornate embroidery, sumptuous fur, cheerful florals, and hint of the exotic.

From 1973 to 1976, and from 1986 to 1988, Oscar de la Renta served as President of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and the trade organization recognized him with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. Mr. de la Renta has dressed first ladies Jacqueline Kennedy, Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton, and most recently Michelle Obama. He also quite famously welcomed disgraced designer John Galliano into his studio during the Spring of 2013. He is a true fashion legend, who will be greatly missed in the fashion industry in the Unites States and internationally.

The pane of 11 stamps dedicated to de la Renta “features an evocative black-and-white portrait of the couturier and 10 details from several of his most exquisite gowns,” according to the U.S. Postal Service. The U.S. government entity further stated: “De la Renta’s innovative designs and close attention to detail are said to have elevated American style and brought international attention to New York as a world leader in fashion.” Art director Derry Noyes designed the stamps, and famed fashion photographers, Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, shot de la Renta’s portrait photo.

The date of the stamps release has not yet been announced.
